Elder abuse, which occurs when someone intentionally harms an elderly person or puts them at serious risk for harm, is far more common than people think. And even more shocking is that the abuse is often at the hands of a family member or another trusted individual. According to the National Council on Aging, almost 10% of Americans aged 60 or older have been a victim of elder abuse.

It’s important to understand that elder abuse takes on many forms beyond physical harm. Here are some types of elder abuse:

1. Physical abuse – the intentional use of force against an elderly person
2. Sexual abuse – forced or unwanted sexual interaction with an older adult, including those with a condition or disability that prevents them from giving consent
3. Financial abuse– illegal, unauthorized, or improper use of an older individual’s resources by someone in a trusting relationship with that individual.
4. Emotional or psychological abuse – intentionally causing mental distress or fear to an elderly person
5. Neglect or abandonment – failure to protect the elderly from harm because of carelessness or disregard or intentionally deserting them

Having an awareness of the various types of abuse can help protect our elderly loved ones from lesser known forms of abuse. If you suspect that someone you love is being abused, it’s important to seek help. For those dealing with elder abuse in Texas, please reach out directly.
